100% Results, High Attendance & Superb Facilities: How a TN Corporation School Is Scripting Success Education
“These children live in unpleasant conditions. Providing better facilities at school make them feel positive about the concept of attending school. So, they make it a point to not miss school”
More often than not, government schools are derided for a lack of infrastructure and poor facilities. But, that’s not the case with Kodungaiyur Corporation School in Tamil Nadu. The school, where 95% of the students come from socially and economically backwards classes, has demonstrated how providing good facilities can increase enrollment in government schools.
As you stand at the entrance of the school, housed in a concrete building, you realise you cannot enter the premises without scanning your fingers. The biometric facilities are used by both
the staff and students. It is also an error-free method to keep track of student attendance. The days of answering proxy attendance calls for your classmates is possibly a thing of the past now!
The school’s security system extends to CCTV cameras too, numbering eight. Additionally, there is a public address system, which allows the principal to directly address the students.
Apart from all the state-of-the-art facilities, this Chennai Corporation-run school has managed to secure 100% results in class 10 Board Exams since 2013. That is, five years in a row!
Usually, the corporation awards schools that have managed to secure perfect results with a check of Rs 1 lakh. Most of this money has been reinvested in the school, which has resulted in providing and maintaining the infrastructure that can rival any privately run school. The contribution of self-motivated donors to figure into the equation of a government-run model school.
This loop seems to be working. Good facilities produce happy students. Happy students produce good results, which in turn brings money to the school.
“These children live in unpleasant conditions. Providing better facilities at school make them feel positive about the concept of attending school. So, they make it a point to not miss school,” said M Subashchandran, headmaster-in-charge, to TOI.
Hopefully, more government-run schools will realise the importance of the impact good infrastructure can have on the morale and motivation of children, for whom schools can provide a safe space and a chance at social mobility.
